Disney might be betting big on titles like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts*, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash this year, but it looks like one of their biggest movies might be the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake — if the trailer views are anything to go off on. Released in 2002, the original Lilo & Stitch was a commercial and critical success at a time when Walt Disney animation was struggling. It has since gained a massive following, with Stitch becoming one of Disney’s most famous characters, so the news of a live-action remake wasn’t shocking. Even if Disney knew the film would be a hit, it is likely they didn’t expect it to generate as much excitement as the trailer suggests.
Deadline has reported that the recent trailer for Lilo & Stitch has generated 158 million views in its first 24 hours. This makes it the second most viewed live-action trailer for a Walt Disney Studios movie. This is above the 124 million views that 2017’s Beauty and the Beast generated, or the 120 million views the first trailer for Snow White garnered. Lilo & Stitch reached the number one spot for trending on X (formerly Twitter) within an hour of the trailer being released, and remained in the top 10 for hours afterward. Lilo & Stitch‘s numbers fall just behind the teaser trailer for 2019’s The Lion King, which brought in 224.6 million views in 24 hours. However, that film is only labeled “live-action” as a caveat, given that it contains no live-action elements and is actually photorealistic animation.

The First Trailer for ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Has Finally Been Released… And It Pulls off the Impossible
The live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ isn’t a one-for-one remake and we’re here for it.
In comparison to other Disney properties, Lilo & Stitch is behind the 200 million views The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer generated a few months ago. However, it just narrowly beat the 157 million views the first trailer for Inside Out 2 generated, and that film went on to become the highest-grossing movie of 2024. While trailer views don’t always translate to box office success (as noted by the Lightyear teaser pulling in 83 million viewers when it first dropped), it does suggest that audience awareness behind Lilo & Stitch is undoubtedly high.
How Big Can ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Get?
Lilo & Stitch is set to go head-to-head with Misson: Impossible – Final Reckoning at the box office on Memorial Day weekend. This is actually the second time Tom Cruise and Stitch have faced off at the box office, as back in 2002, Minority Report narrowly beat out the original Lilo & Stitch for the number one spot during their opening weekend. However, in 2025, Lilo & Stitch might have the upper hand against Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning given the response to the last film. Tom Cruise could see the rumored final entry in his long-running action franchise coming in at number two.
It is worth noting that some of the trailer views for Lilo & Stitch might not all be coming from a positive place. Since the debut of the teaser, some fans have voiced criticism of the film’s decision to have aliens Jumba and Pleakley using holographic human disguises instead of having them be aliens in obvious human disguises, with others critiquing Disney’s decision to downplay Pleakley wearing women’s clothes — possibly as a way to appease more conservative movie audiences. While there seems to be a general sentiment online that audiences are tired of Disney live-action remakes, the box office on films like Mufasa: The Lion King and The Little Mermaid show an appetite for it among plenty of moviegoers. In fact, there is a good chance that Lilo & Stitch might be one of the summer’s biggest movies.
