KUCHING (Feb 23): Sarawak’s rural electricity coverage has increased from 56 per cent in 2009 to almost full coverage by the end of last year, said Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

The Minister for Utility and Telecommunication said this achievement is the result of close collaboration between the ministry, stakeholders and the local community in overcoming challenges such as rough terrain and swamps to lay the foundation for future development.

“The Sarawak government had since 2019 allocated RM2.4 billion under the ‘Project Rakyat’ programme to implement rural electrification initiatives across Sarawak.

“To date, 80 per cent of the allocation has been executed by Sarawak Energy with the remainder at various stages of implementation,” he said during a working visit to Daro recently.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy in a statement yesterday said the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) Last Mile Phase 2 project in Batang Lassa, Daro has been providing reliable and affordable electricity to 464 households across 16 villages since its completion in March last year.

Following this success, the RES Last Mile Phase 3 project in Batang Lassa, which was launched by Julaihi, will supply electricity to 54 households across three villages including 27 households at Rumah Geruka.

Meanwhile, Phase 3 in Passin will extend supply to 186 households across eight villages by the second quarter of next year, ensuring full electrification of Daro.
