In 2023, Missouri exported more than $3.2 billion worth of agriculture and related goods. The state’s Agriculture department is hoping to build off of that by attending several food showcase events in Taiwan beginning on Thursday.
Missouri Ag Director Chris Chinn said the state’s trade office in Taiwan will attend and represent Missouri-grown products, including soybeans, pork, dog and cat food, and forest products.
“The top reason that we look for new export markets is to bring diversity to our Missouri farming and ranching community as well as our agribusinesses,” she said. “We want to help them add value to the products that they are creating. So, that is why we look to export markets to help add value to the products that they create here in Missouri.”
Chinn said it’s important that Missouri’s ag community gets connected with overseas buyers.
“I think we have 3.2 billion reasons as to why we should continue to look for new market access opportunities because that brings a lot of value added back to our rural communities as well as our urban areas too,” said Chinn.
In 2017, Taiwan signed a letter of intent to purchase up to 107 million bushels of soybeans and 197 million bushels of corn between 2018 and 2019 from the U.S., including a significant portion from Missouri. Together, the purchases are valued at around $2.2 billion.
“It’s really great for my team to get to highlight so many different products when we do do trade shows with companies, whether we’re bringing people from other countries and doing a buyer’s mission trip here in Missouri or whether we are taking some of our companies over to other countries to be able to expose their products,” she explained.
Buyers from across Asia are expected to attend the Taiwan trade shows. Several of Missouri’s top ag export partners include China, South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. Missouri is in the top ten for 14 different commodities that are grown in the U.S.
