Trump and Macron’s Messages on Europe and Ukraine in White House Meeting

On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron met at the White House, on Monday February 24, highlighting their differing approaches to the war. The meeting underscored a widening gap between the U.S. and Europe, as Trump pushed for a swift ceasefire deal with Russia.

During their talks, the two leaders maintained a cordial tone, reflecting years of diplomatic ties. However, Macron made it clear that he disagreed with Trump on key issues.

As Reuters reported, Trump notably refused to label Russian President Vladimir Putin a dictator, despite having referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as one the previous week.

Macron, in contrast, firmly stated that Russia is the aggressor in the conflict—an issue on which Trump had wavered.
“President Putin violated peace,” Macron said during a joint press conference with Trump.

Push for a Ceasefire and Peace Talks

Trump reiterated his desire for a ceasefire as soon as possible and said he was working to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. He even suggested he would be willing to travel to Moscow to meet Putin once an agreement is reached.

Macron, however, advocated a more cautious approach—starting with a ceasefire, followed by a security-guaranteed peace agreement.

“We want peace. He wants peace. We want it quickly, but we don’t want a weak deal,” Macron told reporters. Any peace agreement, he added, must be “assessed, verified, and enforced.”

Agreement on European Peacekeeping Forces

Despite their differences, the two leaders found common ground on the deployment of European peacekeeping forces once a peace deal is in place.

“They will not be stationed along the front lines. They will not engage in conflict. Their role will be to ensure that peace is upheld,” Macron stated in the Oval Office, with Trump by his side.

Trump, for his part, said he agreed with the idea, as did Putin.
“Yes, he will accept it,” Trump said when asked about Putin’s stance. “I asked him directly, and he has no issue with it.”

Macron, the first European leader to visit Trump since his return to office a month ago, described their discussions as a “turning point” in efforts toward a more unified approach to the conflict.
