Martin Scorsese Recruits Patrick Wilson to Star in Reboot of His Oscar-Nominated 34-Year-Old Film

Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring and Aquaman franchises) has just boarded the cast of Cape Fear, a new series in the works at Apple TV+. The project has the involvement of Martin Scorsese, who previously directed one version of the film that was released in 1991.

Per Deadline, it’s been revealed that Wilson has taken on a role in the new Cape Fear series adaptation. He is the latest addition to the cast, following Amy Adams (Man of Steel) and Javier Bardem (The Little Mermaid). Nick Antosca is writing and serving as showrunner. Scorsese and fellow Academy Award-winning Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg are serving as executive producers on the project, while Bardem is also serving as an executive producer.

How Annabelle Creation Ends (& How It Connects to The Conjuring)

Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation were spinoffs about the evil doll from The Conjuring. Here is how the films connect.

Cape Fear is derived from author John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. The book inspired the original feature film, 1962’s Cape Fear, which starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen. Scorsese would later direct his own Wesley Strick-penned adaptation that was released in 1991, and the film featured appearances from Peck and Mitchum. It also starred Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis; De Niro and Lewis were both nominated for Academy Awards. The film also heavily inspired one of the most memorable episodes of The Simpsons.

Cape Fear Gets Reimagined as a Series

The series adaptation will consist of 10 episodes, described by Apple TV+ as a “tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.” The story follows attorneys Amanda (Adams) and Steve Bowden as they are stalked and harassed by Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious murderer from their past who had just been released from prison.

Wilson is well known to horror fans for his role as Ed Warren in The Conjuring and its several sequels; the actor and franchise co-star Vera Farmiga will be ending their run in the movie series together with the upcoming film The Conjuring: Last Rites, which hits theaters on Sept. 5. Genre fans also appreciate Wilson for his role in the Insidious horror film series as Josh Lambert. Wilson is also known for playing Ocean Master in the DCEU’s Aquaman and its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

“As the sun sets on The Conjuring franchise… I am overwhelmed,” Wilson said in a social media post last year when the final Conjuring film wrapped filming. “There aren’t enough thanks to go around for the thousands of people who’ve contributed to the making of these films… and the millions who’ve watched them. [Vera Farmiga] … what to say? Our fake marriage has lasted longer than many real ones. I adore you.”

The Cape Fear series doesn’t yet have a premiere date set by Apple TV+.
