Secret Wars Directors Reveal How Much the Comics Will Influence the MCU Film

Avengers: Secret Wars brings the titular comic book crossover event to the big screen as the superhero blockbuster concludes an era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo tease that the big-screen adaptation will put a twist on the Marvel Comics story.

Speaking with TechRadar, the Russos were asked about Secret Wars and how much inspiration the film will take from the titular comic storyline. Though the source material forms the foundation of the Phase Six movie, Joe insists that the comics form a “loose” inspiration for the upcoming tentpole, insisting he and his brother will tell their “own version” of the groundbreaking event.

Kelsey Grammer Expected to Return as Beast Despite Recasting Rumors

Despite a previous rumor that Kelsey Grammer’s Beast will be recast, a new report claims the actor will reprise his role in a major MCU project.

“Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them,” he said.

Well, we always create our own version of the story.

Secret Wars builds on the eponymous crossover storyline Marvel ran from 1984 to 1985, a 12-issue miniseries led by the studio’s editor-in-chief, Jim Shooter. After Shooter created Secret Wars and Secret Wars II, Jonathan Hickman debuted a modern-day version of the miniseries in 2015. The storyline saw several heroes and villains transported to a bizarre alien planet called Battleworld, leading to a transformative faceoff that shaped Marvel Comics’ future.
