Ayo Edebiri has called out Elon Musk for his role in amplifying a fake movie announcement that she says led to a slew of death threats and racial slurs directed at her. The Emmy-winning actress took to Instagram to post a screenshot of Musk reacting to a fabricated announcement about Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
The fake news suggested that Edebiri would replace Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, prompting Musk to weigh in with the dismissive response, “Disney sucks.” Edebiri made it clear just how much backlash came with that moment via her Instagram Story on Tuesday night (March 11).
“Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man LMAO,” she captioned a screenshot of Musk’s reaction. “So not only is he a double s**g h**l-ing fascist, he’s an idiot, but anyway.”

Despite the ordeal, Edebiri kept her tone light, adding “Life is, of course, a gift.” She also shared a humorous exchange with New Girl writer Camilla Blackett, who teased that Edebiri could have actually made a great lead for the non-existent Pirates reboot.
Taking the joke further, Edebiri tagged Disney, writing, “@waltdisneyfrozenhead wait no DEI, but I’ve changed my mind, maybe we can make some money idk lmk.”
While the Pirates rumor was nothing more than fake news, Edebiri is actually gearing up to write for the upcoming live-action Barney film, produced and co-developed by A24 and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions in partnership with Mattel Films. Details on casting remain under wraps, but Edebiri is rumored to be in talks to take on the lead role, as well.
