For the first time in nearly a year and a half, the foreign ministers from Japan, China and South Korea will meet on March 22 in Tokyo, it was announced on March 18.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi―who is also a member of the Communist Party Politburo―and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul will attend the talks, which will include a joint news conference.
This will be the first trilateral meeting of foreign ministers since November 2023, when they met in Busan, South Korea.
The three foreign ministers are expected to discuss promoting people-to-people exchanges, cooperation on issues such as declining birthrates and aging populations, and regional problems.
They will also coordinate on a trilateral summit planned for later this year. However, given the uncertain political situation in South Korea, the focus will be on if an agreement can be reached on the timing of the summit.
On March 22, Japan and China will hold a high-level economic dialogue for the first time in nearly six years.
Talks will focus on issues such as the China’s ban on imports of Japanese seafood after the release of treated water from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the sea, and the resumption of Japanese beef exports.
Additional bilateral meetings between the Japanese and South Korean foreign ministers, as well as between the Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers, are also scheduled for the same day.
