President Donald Trump is pushing for a swift end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the president is confident that a deal could be struck “this week.”
“The president, his team are very much focused on continuing negotiations with both sides of this war to end the conflict, and the president is very confident we can get it done this week,” Leavitt told reporters while returning from CPAC.
She added that National Security Advisor Matt Waltz was “working around the clock” on negotiations, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was involved in talks with Ukraine regarding mineral resource agreements.
“When it comes to the critical minerals, this is an important piece for the president,” Leavitt stated. “It’s very important for the president, because it will recoup American tax dollars. And it also will be a great economic partnership between the United States and the Ukrainian people as they rebuild their country following this brutal war.”
Leavitt’s comments come as Trump reiterated his stance that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would not be directly involved in the negotiations to end the war.
“Zelensky has no cards,” Trump said, referring to the Ukrainian president. Trump has previously called him a “dictator without elections.”
Zelenskyy has recently clashed with the Trump administration over access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing him of dishonesty in negotiations regarding mineral rights.
A tweet circulating online features a clip of Leavitt’s announcement, further signaling the administration’s push for an imminent resolution to the ongoing conflict.
