The six largest banks in Serbia recorded a net profit of EUR 1.1 billion in 2024, which is 30% more than in 2023, according to Danas. The calculation includes only the six biggest banks, each with assets exceeding EUR 5 billion, as not all banks have published their financial statements for the previous year.
As in 2023, Raiffeisen Bank posted the highest profit last year. The Austrian bank earned EUR 249.2 million after taxes, compared to EUR 182 million in 2023.
Second in terms of profit, just like the previous year, was the Italian bank Intesa, which recorded EUR 229 million, up from nearly EUR 180 million in 2023.
In third place last year was the Hungarian OTP Bank, which, following a growth strategy through acquisitions, has become one of the largest banks in the Serbian market. The bank posted a net profit of EUR 219 million, up from EUR 143 million in 2023.
The fourth largest profit was recorded by the Italian Unicredit Bank, which earned EUR 200.6 million, compared to EUR 157.7 million in 2023.
Fifth on the list is the Slovenian NLB Komercijalna Banka, with a profit of EUR 141.6 million, around EUR 13 million more than the previous year.
Finally, among the top six banks is the domestic AIK Bank. Its profit last year amounted to EUR 82.2 million, up from almost EUR 70 million in 2023.
AIK Bank also owns Eurobank Direktna, which earned EUR 14.9 million last year, slightly more than the previous year. The total net profit of this group in the past year was around EUR 97 million.
As usual, the biggest generator of net income for the banks last year was interest.
Net interest income of the six largest banks totalled EUR 1.64 billion last year, which is an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
The second-largest source of income for banks came from fees and commissions. For these six banks, this revenue increased by 16% last year, reaching EUR 580 million.
Measured by asset size, these six banks control over 60% of the total banking market.
The largest bank by market share last year remained Intesa, with EUR 8.8 billion in assets. OTP Bank ranked second with EUR 8.1 billion in assets, while Unicredit and Raiffeisen followed in third and fourth place, each with just over EUR 6.3 billion. Fifth in size is the combined AIK and Eurobank Direktna, with EUR 6.5 billion, while NLB Komercijalna Banka ranked sixth with EUR 5.5 billion.
The total assets of these six banks amounted to nearly EUR 42 billion last year.
During the past year, the assets of the largest banks increased by 10.5%, with Unicredit Bank achieving the highest growth at 16.3%.
