The Arizona State Sun Devils close out the regular season against No. 9 Texas Tech on Saturday.

The Sun Devils have lost nine of their last 10 games but have been competitive, even against top-tier teams. ASU lost to No. 24 Arizona on Tuesday but scored 100 points and shot 47% from the field and had only four turnovers.

The game was more competitive than most expected given the personnel issues. The game ended with ASU having just one player on the floor, who had started the majority of games this season as injuries were again a factor and two players fouled out. That left coach Bobby Hurley with only five available players, two of whom have played little.

Senior point guard Alston Mason is coming off a season-high 33 points. He has been the stabilizing factor for a team that has played through a lot of turmoil.

ASU is locked into the No. 15 seed for the conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. Texas Tech is in the hunt for the No. 2 seed.

No. 9 Texas Tech (23-7, 14-5) at Arizona State (13-17, 5-15)

Time/Site: 6 p.m. Saturday, Desert Financial Arena

TV: ESPNU. Radio: Arizona Sports 98.7 FM (KMVP)

About the matchup: This is the second matchup between the teams. The first, played on Feb. 12 in Lubbock, was a classic. Texas Tech won that 111-106 in double overtime. ASU had a one-basket lead at the end of regulation and in the first overtime, only to have Texas Tech get the equalizer at the buzzer. Adam Miller had 22 points and the since-dismissed B.J. Freeman had 21. J.T. Toppin had 41 for Texas Tech. A turning point came with 3:45 left in the second overtime when Mason fouled out with ASU up 101-100. The Sun Devils turned the ball over four times after that.

About the Red Raiders: Texas Tech is tied for second in the Big 12 with Arizona behind only Houston. The Red Raiders are led by 6-foot-9 sophomore forward J.T. Toppin (17.8 ppg, 9.2 rpg), whom the Sun Devils could not contain in the first meeting. Chance McMillian (14.9 ppg), a transfer from Grand Canyon, is also averaging double figures, as is junior forward Darrion Williams (14.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg). Texas Tech ranks 33rd in scoring offense (81 ppg) among 355 schools. It ranks 48th in defense, giving up 67.1 ppg. It is also 47th in rebounding margin at +4.

About the Sun Devils: This will be the last regular-season game for Mason (13.4 ppg), Basheer Jihad (12.1 ppg) and Adam Miller, who will be celebrated on “Senior Day.” Miller (9.8 ppg) has missed the last two games with a hip injury sustained in the Feb. 26 loss to BYU. He tried to play Saturday against Arizona but had to leave a minute into the game and did not return. Sanon missed five games with an ankle injury and struggled to regain his shooting form when he came back, but he seems to have worked his way out of that, now with 65 points in his last three games. Mason is averaging 19 points over his last eight games and scored 20 or more points in four games.
