‘Batman’ Standalone Spinoff Horror Film ‘Clayface’ Sets Director

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The DC Universe may be run by James Gunn, but there are going to be many films that are to be considered in the DC Elseworlds universe. These movies will be like the Matt Reeves “Batman” universe, and potentially a new horror take on one of the Dark Knight’s most infamous villains.

Based on a script written by horror aficionado Mike Flanagan (“Doctor Sleep”), DC is set to release a standalone spinoff surrounding Clayface. The body-morphing villain is not only getting a solo film but the film is set to take the villain into the horror genre.

DC had been looking for a director, and now that director has been confirmed. “See No Evil” helmer James Watkins will officially sit behind the director’s chair for this offshoot “Batman” film.

Interestingly, Gunn met with Watkins on Thursday to hear his final presentation and offered him the gig. Gunn, Reeves, Lynn Harris, and Peter Safran will produce the film.

This new horror standalone might be what DC is looking for in terms of a way of bringing in Clayface as a villain for Reeves’ “Batman” universe, as it has also been revealed that the new DCU will see actors who voice the characters in animation also play them in live-action.

Alan Tudyk is one of the biggest voices for Clayface, as he has held the role for the character in the “Harley Quinn” series.

The new “Clayface” film is targeting a targeting September 11, 2026 release date, and is said to be a “horror-thriller-tragedy, with the lead protagonist not expected to be portrayed as the notorious villain he’s known as in the Batman canon.”

The character Clayface has gone through multiple iterations in the comics, shows, and extended mediums for DC. Generally portrayed by actors in the comics such as Basil Karlo, Matt Hagen, and Preston Payne, the villain has a troubled backstory.

Initially, Karlo dawns a costume from a creature in a film called “Dead Castle,” when he finds out the film is being remade without him. He goes insane from envy, taking on the Clayface costume, and murdering anyone who has anything to do with the production.

Matt Hagen was Clayface in “Batman: The Animated Series,” which showcases the villain as the shapeshifter. He uses a cream called “Renuyu,” leading to him becoming disfigured but being able to shape his body into monstrous shapes.

It will be interesting to see what DC does with this horror take on one of Batman’s biggest villains. We may also see the character appear in “The Batman 2,” considering how Reeves and Gunn are involved in producing.
