Downton Abbey: Jim Carter shares details on third film
Downton Abbey star Jim Carter has paid tribute to his late co-star Dame Maggie Smith in a moving interview on ITV’s This Morning – and delivered an update on the third film for fans.
The actor was best known for playing Mr Charles Carson in the ITV period drama and he’ll be reprising the role in Downton Abbey’s upcoming third film.
Speaking to presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley about Downton Abbey’s third film, Jim revealed that fans can expect it in cinemas in just a few months’ time.
“I think I’m allowed to tell you that it’s opening on September 12,” he said. “I’ve filmed certain parts of it in the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, which is 300 yards from where I was born.”

Ben added that while it would have been “magical” to reunite with his fellow co-stars, he’ll be missing Dame Maggie, who played Violet Crawley in the films and passed away aged 89 in September.
Jim said: “Of course, we won’t see her like again really. An iconic figure whose career started in classical theatre and then expanded to worldwide fame, winning Oscars at the drop of a hat.
“How lucky we were to work so closely with her for so longer in Downton Abbey. Get me back another time and I’ll tell you about when Maggie Smith met Shirley MacLaine. I mean that was amazing.”
Earlier this week, Downton Abbey producer Gareth Neame teased what’s to come from the third film and how Dame Maggie’s death has impacted the sequel. “The fact that Dame Maggie herself has now passed away since that time, I do think, has given a real added poignancy to a story that we would have planned anyway,” he said.
“The loss of the Dowager [in Downton Abbey: A New Era], it now feels far more significant that you see actors playing characters mourning the family matriarch. But I also see actors mourning the matriarch of the show, and it feels more genuine and more meaningful.”
Yesterday, Jim’s Downton Abbey co-star Tuppence Middleton appeared on This Morning to speak about her experience with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), which she explores in her new book.
“For me, OCD always felt like this crawling, sinister presence,” Tuppence said, explaining why her book on the subject is called Scorpions.
“The idea of scorpions crawling around in my head was something that always struck a chord. It started after I had a prolonged illness as a child, I had chronic fatigue syndrome and I was constantly nauseous, I lost a lot of weight, I was very tired, I couldn’t get out of bed. That lasted for a few months and when I finally recovered, I started to get symptoms of OCD.”
