Thomas Heatherwick’s London-based studio defeated an undisclosed shortlist or rival teams to win the commission to rethink the purpose and facade of the prominent conference and exhibition venue in the South Korean capital. The name Coex is a portmanteau of ‘convention’ and ‘exhibition’.
Heatherwick’s winning concept will transform the building’s current ‘unremarkable façade’ with a concept featuring modular boxes of varying sizes inspired by a cabinet of curiosities.
Key aims include maximising material reuse and creating a façade that is ‘open, engaging and unmissable – breaking away from the fortress-like appearance of the current structure’.
Heatherwick executive partner and group leader Stuart Wood said: ‘Ironically for places that bring people together, most convention centres feel imposing and uninviting and are often devoid of public activity.

Heatherwick studio has won a competition to reimagine the Coex convention centre in Seoul
‘Our design will radically reinvent Coex to become a new cultural destination for the city of Seoul, that attracts both locals and visitors alike.
‘Varied and unusual, our “display case” design offers endless potential to curate art, performance, dining, entertainment, nature and is a true representation of Seoul’s creative power.
‘We want Coex to become an irresistible place that is open, dynamic and always culturally relevant.’
The Gangnam district achieved global fame in 2012 through the K-pop song ‘Gangnam Style’ by singer PSY, which parodied the region’s nouveau richer reputation.

Heatherwick’s win comes two months after the studio was named as one of five finalists in the contest to design a Queen Elizabeth II memorial in London’s St James’s Park.
Last summer, the practice won a competition to overhaul Hanwha Galleria, a department store in the south-east of Seoul.
The Coex upgrade is planned to complete in 2029.
