How to Watch the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Ready for some celebrity sightings by the beach? Because the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards are pitching a tent and taking over the Santa Monica Pier this Saturday, February 22. The annual ceremony will once again be hosted by “SNL” alum and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant, who presided over last year’s events, where she joined a long list of hilarious Spirit Awards emcees that includes Hasan Minaj, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Offerman, John Mulaney and Nick Kroll, Kate McKinnon, and Sarah Silverman. This year also marks an important milestone for Film Independent, as this is its 40th year presenting awards to its community.

For those who want to celebrate at home, the festivities will be streamed live on IMDB’s YouTube and other social platforms, as well as via Film Independent’s YouTube channel starting at 2:00pm PT/5:00pm ET. See the full list of Spirit Awards nominees here.

While last year’s Spirit Awards only had a few crossover wins with the Oscars ceremony that followed, including Cord Jefferson receiving Best Screenplay and Da’Vine Joy Randolph claiming Best Supporting Performance, this year there may be even fewer. The big ones to watch for are Sean Baker’s “Anora,” which won all three major guild awards’ top prize, but lost the BAFTA, and RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys,” which has quickly become the favorite for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Though Brady Corbet did receive a nomination for Best Director at the upcoming Spirit Awards, his film, “The Brutalist,” did not manage to secure a spot amongst the Best Feature nominees, which consist of “Anora,” “Nickel Boys,” “I Saw the TV Glow,” “Sing Sing,” and “The Substance.” Both “Anora” and “I Saw the TV Glow” lead nominations with five each, followed closed behind by Sean Wang’s coming-of-age dramedy “Dìdi” with four.

Ever since 2023, the Spirit Awards have enforced a gender-neutral policy in regards to its acting categories, but since its implementation, this often results in one category being claimed by a female performer and the other a male. That same year, Film Independent also increased the budget cap for eligible films, bringing it up to $30 million. Even so, this placed many Oscar contenders such as “A Complete Unknown,” “Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “Dune: Part Two” outside of the realm of eligibility.

The only crossover between Spirit Awards and Oscar nominations in regards to international features is the Latvian animated adventure “Flow,” which has already received a number of accolades including the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature — Independent. BAFTA winner and Oscar hopeful Mikey Madison is also looking to eke out another win against main competitor Demi Moore in the category of Lead Performance, but both face stiff competition from fellow Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo for his role in “Sing Sing.”

As has been known to happen, Spirit Awards weekend also coincides with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will be taking place Sunday, February 23 starting at 5:00pm PT/8:00pm ET and streaming on Netflix.
