King Charles is set to welcome a brand new Prime Minister and the incoming leader has already laid down battle lines with Donald Trump.
Canada is set to get a new PM after the ruling Liberals held a leadership election with the winner claiming stewardship of the party and the country.
The latest Prime Minister of the reign of King Charles is Mark Carney. He’ll become Canada’s PM in the coming days after comfortably winning the race to be leader of the Liberals following the resignation of Justin Trudeau. That means Mark Carney will be the second Canadian Prime Minister in the reign of Charles III who is also King of Canada.
Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and former Governor of the Bank of England, won 85% of ballots. He takes over as PM in the midst of a trade war with the US – President Donald Trump has just announced tariffs on Canadian goods.
The US figured large in Mark Carney’s acceptance speech with Donald Trump’s remarks on Canada’s nationhood drawing his strongest words. The incoming PM said ”America is not Canada. And Canada never ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form.”
Mr Trump has said previously that Canada would be the 51st state and referred to outgoing PM Justin Trudeau as the country’s ”governor”.
However, Mark Carney made clear his attitude to Donald Trump within moments of being declared PM in waiting. He said that ”a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him not stand up to him” and he referred to recent attitudes to Canada by the US leader in a hard hitting phrase as he commented ”these are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”
Mark Carney will take over as PM in the coming days. He doesn’t hold a seat in Canada’s parliament and his time as King Charles III’s latest Prime Minister might well be limited. There must be a general election in Canada by October and the Liberal party are currently a long way behind the Conservatives in polls. The Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, has previously aligned himself with some of Donald Trump’s ideas but has started to pull away from that in recent weeks.
Donald Trump has long declared himself a fan of King Charles and the Royal Family. He’s just been invited to make a second State Visit to the UK – the first time an elected leader has been asked to make a repeat visit.
