Melissa Joan Hart (“Sabrina the Teenage Witch”) chatted about her upcoming original Lifetime thriller “Killing the Competition,” which will premiere on Saturday, March 1st.
This film was inspired by actual events of an overbearing mother who descends from meddling to menacing after her daughter is cut from the dance team of her own high school alma mater.
In a desperate attempt to reclaim what she believes is rightfully theirs, she becomes involved in a shocking kidnapping plot.
‘Killing the Competition’ movie
On her new Lifetime film, Hart remarked, “I am excited. This is a really interesting one for me. It’s different. I’ve done a lot of their Christmas movies and a few years ago, I transitioned more into doing some of their True Crime projects. So, it has been really fun, exciting, and different.”
“I am really excited for the audience to explore this new path we’ve taken with this character and this story, in particular,” she noted.
“It is stranger than fiction, and it is just wild and bizarre. At the same time, that is what makes it such a great story to tell,” she acknowledged.
Working with Eddie Mills
On working with Eddie Mills, she shared, “I got to work with my pal, Eddie Mills, who played my romantic interest in ‘Sabrina Goes to Rome’ and here we are, as a married couple.”
“It was so much fun to film it, and it was fun to do the whole production and to build this character, and discover who she is, and then, act it all out,” she noted.
“We had some fun in West Virginia with a wonderful crew there. I am excited or fearful about what the audience might say about this character and this movie,” she added.
Playing a cringey character
“This character and this movie in general was very juicy,” she admitted. “My character is very cringey, and it was so fun to actually trust the cringe-worthiness of it. I am so proud to have this movie come out on Lifetime.”
Taking on the role of actor and producer
On taking on the double roles of actress and producer, she responded, “I’ve been doing that since I was 20; ever since I did ‘Sabrina.’ My production company, Hartbreak films, started doing that with ‘Sabrina,’ so I’ve done dozens and dozens of movies. Sometimes, I direct, produce, and sometimes I act.”
“I love producing because you get to be more involved creatively,” she said. “I love the whole aspect of being in creative control of the vision.”
The digital age
On being a part of the digital age, Hart said, “It is kind of wild. It extends the life of a show, where it doesn’t only live in the DVD world. Now, streaming puts shows out there internationally, and people can watch it anytime and anywhere.”
“The show was already very international and very loved, and it gets to see a new generation, and the old generations get to go back to a comfy nostalgia place with it, especially during COVID,” she acknowledged.
“I think the digital age is very special,” she added.
90s Con and Christmas Con
Hart truly enjoys being a part of 90s Cons and Christmas Con. “They are great,” she exclaimed. “There couldn’t be a nicer convention than Christmas Con. Everything is hot cocoa and cookies, and it is decorated like fireplaces and pretty lights. Everything smells like cinnamon. Those are really fun.”
“Also, the 90s Con is just wild,” she admitted. “It has all the people that I’ve worked with, and people that work with each other.”
“I also lived in Connecticut for 12 years, and grew up in New York, so I get to see family and friends when I am up there, so 90s Con is special for all those reasons,” she added.
Advice for hopefuls
For young and aspiring actors, she encouraged them to “keep going.”
“This is a tough business, and it can crack you and break you. If you have the funds to keep going, then keep going. It’s a numbers game. It is really helpful to diversify your creative portfolio. Also, really know your brand,” she underscored.
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Hart revealed, “Fearless Forties.”
Success
Regarding her definition of the word success, Hart expressed, “At the end of the day, success just means being happy.”
Closing thoughts
For her fans and supporters, she remarked about the new Lifetime thriller, “I am just curious. I want them to watch it, and I hope they come to my Instagram to tell me what they thought of it.”
“Honestly, I think it is going to have many different kinds of reactions because it is outside of the norm and it’s uncomfortable,” she concluded.
