Mixed reactions to new banking hub in Risca town centre

The former Barclays Bank on Tredegar Street officially opened its doors on February 14 at 11am.

This hub offers a counter service run by the Post Office, allowing customers of many major banks to conduct cash transactions from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Additionally, the hub features a community banker service, where customers can discuss more complex banking issues with representatives from their own banks.

Community bankers from several banks are available on specific days of the week, including Barclays on Mondays and Lloyds on Thursdays.

Newport West and Islwyn MP Ruth Jones expressed her delight at the opening, stating: “I am delighted the Risca Banking Hub is open for business.

“Residents now have a brilliant modern facility on the high street where they can withdraw and deposit cash, pay utility bills and sit down with a friendly face from banks like Barclays, Halifax and Lloyds.”

She also thanked Cash Access UK for bringing the project to Risca.

Many residents welcomed the hub’s opening.

Sharon Morgan commented: “It’s great to talk face to face when dealing with your finances.”

This sentiment resonates with those who appreciate having someone to consult regarding their financial matters.

However, not all feedback has been positive.

Andrea Thomas voiced concern over the growing number of bank closures that have made hubs like this necessary.

Pat Clair Colin Howells echoed her frustrations, highlighting the need for more traditional banking services in the area.

Calls have emerged for the reopening of some local banks, pointing out that not all banking companies are represented at the hub.

Sally Stewart has urged for TSB to establish a presence at banking hubs, as this seems to be a growing trend across many communities.

Meanwhile, Gaynor Dowsell and Lydia Filer have pushed for banking hubs to consider also opening in Caerphilly and Cwmbran, respectively.

Risca councillor Robert Owen has been reminding residents that customers of all the banks who have found a new home in Risca at the hub are able to do their banking at any time during opening hours and are not just restricted to the day their community banker is in post.

As the community adapts to the new banking hub, it remains to be seen how it will shape the future of banking in Risca.
