New Fantasy Film Based on Game of Thrones Author’s Short Story Lands an Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Score

The debut score for a new film based on a short story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has been revealed on Rotten Tomatoes, and it is not good. In the Lost Lands, starring Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich, has debuted on the review aggregator with a “Rotten” 18% critic score.

Martin’s In the Lost Lands short story was first featured in a 1982 anthology of fantasy stories titled Amazons II. The author is widely known for creating the Game of Thrones series of novels upon which the hugely successful HBO series of the same title was based.

However, based on early Rotten Tomatoes reviews, In the Lost Lands isn’t living up to any Game of Thrones-type of hype. The series, which ran for 8 seasons from 2011 to 2019, has an 89% critic score on the review aggregator, compared to the 18% that In the Lost Lands currently has.

The Movie Comes from Resident Evil Franchise Director

In the Lost Lands is directed by Resident Evil franchise filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson with a screenplay by Constantin Werner and the screen story by Werner and Anderson. The film follows a witch, known as Grey Alys (Jovovich) who sets out into the Lost Lands to fulfill a wish for the queen (Amara Okereke). The film is set in the very distant future after a disastrous war where the laws of nature do not apply. While Alys is on her quest to free her people from oppression, she finds Boyce (Bautista) who helps to guide her in navigating the Lost Lands.

17 Critics Have Reviewed the Film

The film’s “Rotten” score is based on 17 reviews from film critics. Shawn Van Horn from Collider had this to say about In the Lost Lands via Rotten Tomatoes: “From the effects, to the acting, and everything in between, there is nothing real in the Lost Lands. It’s an opportunity lost.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Schenck wrote: “Unlike so many of Anderson’s efforts, In the Lost Lands isn’t adapted from a video game. But it sure as hell feels like one, and not one that would be fun to play.”

CBR’s Jamie Parker reviewed In the Lost Lands and said, “The movie has all of Anderson’s trademark style, and while it has some fun action, it feels like a B-movie that is stuck in 2002.” Parker further stated that the story of In the Lost Lands “remains a shallow action movie that, while enjoyable, does little to challenge the audience or present them with something they haven’t seen before.

Martin Calls the Film “A Lot of Fun”

In November, Martin took to his blog, excited about In the Lost Lands, writing at that time that the film was “dark and twisted and atmospheric, and a lot of fun.” He added via the blog, “A long time ago, I had hoped to write a series of stories about Gray Alys and those bold enough to buy from her…but life and other stories intervened, and somehow I never got around to writing that second tale. But who knows? If the film does well enough, maybe I will finally write that sequel.”

Moviegoers can see for themselves whether In the Lost Lands will warrant a sequel when the film hits theaters on March 7.
