New Mexico State (14-11, 2-1 Conference USA) won its opening series in conference play this past weekend by taking two of three games against Louisiana Tech (12-11, 1-2) on the road.
The Aggies defeated the Bulldogs 5-0 and 3-1 on Friday and Saturday, but fell 10-4 in the final game of the series on Sunday.
Skye Johnson earned an RBI in each game of the series, while Kristiana Watson hit a home run in two of the three games. NM State earned complete game performances from Desirae Spearman and Faith Aragon on Friday and Saturday, respectively, helping the Aggies allow only one run in the first two games of the series.
Here’s a recap of each game in the series:
Friday: NM State 5, LA Tech 0
The Aggies blanked the Bulldogs to start the series, scoring in four consecutive innings from the second to the fifth.
Two runs scored in the top of the second inning thanks to a throwing error from LA Tech third baseman Claire Raley, allowing Kenzie Nicholson to reach third base and Kendal Lunar and Payton Nicholson to score from third and second base, respectively. Kenzie Nicholson was later tagged out after over-sliding past third base and leaving the bag.
Watson hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put the Aggies up 3-0 before two RBI singles from Johnson and Lauren Garcia in the fourth and fifth innings extended the lead to 5-0.
Spearman pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only four hits with seven strikeouts. She earned her seventh pitching win of the season to improve her record to 7-2 in 2025.
Saturday: NM State 3, LA Tech 1
The Aggies clinched a series victory on Saturday with consecutive wins over the Bulldogs, and rallied from behind to do it.
LA Tech scored first in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI triple from Alannah Rogers, but NM State responded in the top of the fourth with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Garcia and Johnson earned RBIs in consecutive games with an RBI single for the former and an RBI double for the latter.
The Aggies earned an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a RBI single from Lunar, extending their lead to their margin of victory.
Saturday was Aragon’s turn to pitch a complete game, doing so with just one earned run allowed to improve her pitching record to 4-4. She also struck out eight batters and allowed seven hits.
Sunday: NM State 4, LA Tech 10
The series finale didn’t go the Aggies’ way, snapping a three-game winning streak.
NM State scored first in the top of the first inning off an RBI single from Johnson, but LA Tech responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Aggies tied the game at 2-2 thanks to another solo home run from Watson, but a sacrifice fly in the bottom half gave the Bulldogs another lead.
A two-run home run from Taylor Nicholson in the top of the fourth inning put NM State out in front at 4-3, but LA Tech went on a scoring run after that with seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Bulldogs notched four in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a large lead and coast to victory.
For LA Tech, Addison Snyder tallied three RBIs, while Nicole Hammoude recorded two RBIs. The Aggies used three pitchers on Sunday. Jaileen Mancha started the game, but only lasted one-third of an inning before Faith Aragon replaced her. Aragon took her fifth pitching loss of the season after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings. Tayrn Bennett finished the game, replacing Aragon two batters into the bottom of the sixth inning and recording all three outs in the frame.
What’s next?
The Aggies return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday against in-state rival New Mexico (14-11-1) at home and play their first Conference USA home series against Jacksonville State (18-7, 3-0) starting at 6 p.m. Friday and continuing into Sunday. The Gamecocks are coming off a three-game series sweep over UTEP this past weekend.
