MTWARA: THE Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) is implementing an engagement programme aimed at fostering linkages between the oil and natural gas sector and the education sector.
As part of this initiative, the regulator is inviting education stakeholders in the country to visit natural gas production and processing facilities to broaden their understanding of the extraction subsector.
Recently, PURA organized a site visit involving representatives from the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) and the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET).
During the visit, delegates had the opportunity to tour natural gas processing plants operated by GASCO, a subsidiary of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), in Madimba, Mtwara Region.
The delegates also toured Mtwara Teaching College to observe how the proper utilization of natural gas is revolutionizing the education sector.
The college has transitioned from using firewood to natural gas for cooking, setting an example of sustainable energy use.

Commenting on the initiative, TCU’s Chief of Quality Control, Dr Malehe Cosmas Setta, VETA’s Research Manager, Mr John Ndega, and University of Dar es Salaam lecturer, Dr. Adela Syikilili, expressed that the visit had enhanced their understanding of the oil and gas subsector, as well as the skills required in the industry.
They agreed that the insights gained from the visit would be instrumental in developing curricula that align with the current demands of the oil and gas industry.
On his part, PURA’s representative, Mr Musa Ryoba, emphasized that the visit was part of a broader strategy by the regulator to strengthen connections between the oil and gas sector and other industries, including education, to create a meaningful impact on the country’s economy.
