RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh City Council passed $75 million in bonds Tuesday for a new hotel.
The money will go toward the new Omni Hotel, which leaders said would be a focal point for tourists near the new Red Hat Amphitheater.
The city council voted last September to approve closing a portion of South Street as another step toward the future of the city’s convention center expansion. The project includes relocating the Red Hat Amphitheater.

The Raleigh City Council got to see the new design ideas for the future of Red Hat Amphitheater Tuesday from executive director of the Raleigh Convention and Performing Arts Complex Kerry Painting.
Painting said the next step is city council approval on a current contract agreement which would authorize pre-construction work around the new amphitheater site.
She said in the meantime they have been obtaining the proper permits and will close South Street permanently.
“Next big step is to close the road April 14,” Painting said.
If the contract is approved, following the closure of South Street, staging will begin for the construction of the new amphitheater.
Painting said that’s when the physical work will begin.
“Working on utilities, putting up some fencing, getting some trailers out there, all the things that make it start to look like a construction site,” Painting said.
In 2024, 92,000 people attended Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown Raleigh. The same year, Red Hat’s concert season and the ice rink brought in $33 million.
Painting said it’s good to remember these venues are for entertainment but also to help the economy.
“That’s a lot. That’s jobs and that’s people eating downtown and staying in hotels. And so, yeah, we make a difference. And at the same time, we get to just make a moment,” Painting said.
While the planning continues, Painting said she wants people to be informed about how to get around on foot, or if they’re driving near the construction.
She said the connector lane to help vehicles travel east from South Street into downtown is still being designed.
Despite these future changes, the 2025 season at Red Hat Amphitheater will be in full swing come April.
Painting said they are not sure of the timeline for Red Hat Amphitheater’s relocation and the Raleigh Convention Center construction.
But she said groundbreaking for this project will happen late spring or summer.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $330 million.
Leaders said the $75 million in bonds toward the Omni Hotel won’t be issued until the hotel developer secures its private financing.
The Omni Hotel, across from the performing arts center, will open in 2028.
