Sam Burgess’ honest verdict on Warrington loss to Wakefield

The Wire have now slipped to back-to-back defeats after Wakefield Trinity ran out 30-16 winners at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Following another poor performance in defeat to Wigan Warriors in Las Vegas last weekend, it raises yet more concerns about where the squad currently sits in the early rounds of 2025.

Here is everything Burgess had to say to the media in his post-match press conference…

Q: Your general thoughts on the game please, Sam?

SB: It’s a tough loss. It wasn’t a great game at all.

There’s probably not a lot more to say about it at the moment.

Q: You’ve had the recovery from the jet lag and there’s a few injuries in there, but is it too easy to pin the blame just on that?

SB: Yes.

Q: You’re in the game at half-time, so where did it get away from you?

SB: The scoreline suggested we were in the game at half time, but a few of our actions didn’t suggest to me that we were.

We came out with a bit more resolve but we really struggled to today. The players have to come up with some answers.

Q: Is this a big test of you as a coach as for the first time, there’s people on the terraces really questioning your team?

SB: Good – they have every right to.

They pay their money to come and watch that and it wasn’t a great spectacle.

It’s a great test for everyone at the moment – for the players, myself, my staff and the fans.

It will test our resolve, some of our younger players will get a go so we’ll see how they go.

Q: Are you seeing anything that concerns you longer-term? Defensively, for example, it’s now 30 points conceded in back-to-back weeks having not conceded any more than 25 all year last year?

Is it still a blip?

SB: I’m just seeing a side that’s a bit low on confidence.

We got beat in every facet, which is not like us. Physically, they were a bit stronger than us.

I think they got five short drop-outs back in the first half so we’re getting into good areas, but it’s then a concentration thing.

We then get in front and then lose the kick-off – it was like under 10s stuff, and then we conceded a try that was like an under 10s try.

That’s what I’m seeing and there’s a few things to have a look at.

Q: How big an impact did not having Matt Dufty have?

SB: One player doesn’t make a side.

I had 17 players on the field that I believed in. We’ve put our sides with more players missing than that in the past and we’ve done better.

A few players have got to have a look at what they’re turning out for the side.

Q: But having five seniors missing, does that make a real impact?

SB: Last year I pretty much threw in 17 debutants and we got beat by a point against Wigan.

I can’t accept any of those excuses, and neither should the players.

I brought in Rod Tai, Stefan Ratchford, Adam Holroyd, Alfie Johnson – it’s not like I’m bringing in players who have never played before. They’re all competent players.

Q: You sound really angry about this?

SB: I’m not angry. I’m telling the truth – it’s my job to tell the truth.

It’s just the way it is.
