When I was in middle school, the movie In Country was released, and I thought it was cool that it was shot in and around the Paducah area. The story was based on a novel by Kentucky author Bobbie Ann Mason. It starred Bruce Willis as a Vietnam vet who suffers from PTSD, and British actress Emily Lloyd plays Willis’s niece. Her father was killed in the war.
Fun fact: Willis’s then-wife, Oscar nominee Demi Moore, gave birth to the couple’s first daughter, Rumer, at Baptist Hospital in Paducah.
That was 1988. Now, with the Kentucky Entertainment Incentive Program, more filmmakers are shooting in our state than ever. Just last week, Governor Beshear attended and spoke at the grand opening of the Kentucky Sound Stage here in Owensboro.
One movie that was shot in Louisville came out in theaters this week. Queen of the Ring tells the true story of Mildred Burke, who became America’s first female professional wrestler.
Director Ash Avilsden has complimented the city’s history-friendly locations, which include the Louisville Palace, The Henry Clay, Oxmoor Farm, Actors Theatre, and the Seelbach and Brown hotels.
Amber Alert came out last year and is currently streaming on Hulu, and its setting is Louisville. Here’s the plot:
“A rideshare becomes a high-stakes game of cat and mouse when Jaq and Shane receive an Amber Alert on their phones. When they spot the kidnapper’s car with the girl in the back seat, they desperately race against time to save her before it’s too late.”
The neighborhoods of Hurstborne and Middletown are mentioned in the movie. Amber Alert stars Hayden Panettiere and Tyler James Williams.
Rounding out the March releases shot in Louisville and central Kentucky, Bob Trevino Likes It stars John Leguizamo and Barbie Ferreria. It’s the semi-autographical story of director Tracie Lymon, who formed a friendship with a stranger while searching for her father.
Oh my goodness! The film comes out nationwide on March 28th, and it will be in Louisville theaters on April 4th.
