Lt. Col. Hume

A distinguished U.S. Air Force veteran received special recognition this week from the Logan County Commissioners, honoring his service to country and sacrifices for more than two decades from 1994 to 2015.

Bellefontaine area resident Lt. Col. Robert C. Hume received the flag that was flown above the Logan County Courthouse during January at a ceremony Thursday, Feb. 20, at the commissioners’ office, accompanied by his wife of more than 25 years, Kim.

Commissioners Greg Fitzpatrick, Mike Yoder and Joe Antram expressed their appreciation for his honorable and faithful service to the U.S. and his local community.

A native of Canal Fulton in Stark County in eastern Ohio, Col. Hume graduated in 1988 from Northwest High School and received his Baccalaureate in General Studies with a Minor in Political Science from Kent State University, where he was commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program.

While an Air Command and Staff College instructor, he taught Joint Warfare doctrine and was a guest instructor at both The NATO School and Germany’s military staff college.

Col. Hume culminated his career working for the US Transportation Command, delivering tailored intelligence to support global force projection operations for every combatant command and providing humanitarian relief efforts for millions of people.

The decorated veteran received a number of awards during his service, including: the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Air Force Commendation Medal; the Joint Service Achievement Medal; the Air Force Achievement Medal; the Army Achievement Medal; the Meritorious Unit Award; the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; the National Defense Service Medal with 1 Service Star; the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Air Force Overseas Ribbon; the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon; the Air Force Longevity Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Rifle Ribbon; and the Air Force Training Ribbon, among other awards and decorations.

In addition to the commissioners, fellow county officials in attendance included Logan County Auditor Jack Reser and Logan County Clerk of Courts Jackie Prater; and commissioners’ office staff Logan County Administrator David Henry and Administrative Clerk DeDe Doss. Representatives from Logan County Veterans Office at the ceremony included Amy Ricketts and Laurie Varner.
