UTSA lost to East Carolina University 10-5 on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (12-7) opened with a two-point lead but could not defend home plate against the Pirates (12-7) three consecutive two-run middle innings. Trailing by one run late in the game, the Roadrunners battled to steal the win. However, a seventh inning grand slam from East Carolina sealed the ‘Runners fate.
“Tough to swallow right there,” coach Vann Stuedeman said. “I thought we executed our offensive plan pretty well. What we’d like to see a little better offensively is that after the home run, the next hitter gets on; we want to see that bat get passed a little bit. I don’t think that happened tonight.”
Going into the seventh inning, freshman catcher Makayla Madrid, sophomore catcher Kalee Rochinski and senior infielder Camryn Robillard sprinkled single homers across the third, fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Cutting down the Pirates lead to one point, the Roadrunners trailed at 6-5.

Bases were loaded when outfielder Kanisha Anderson singled in the top of the seventh, but freshman pitcher Ava Eldridge and Rochinski worked together to stop infielder Logan Sutton from passing through home plate. That opened the way for outfielder Emma Jackson to launch a grand slam over the left field wall.
“We gave them too many free passes, and they took advantage of it,” Stuedeman said. “That’s probably the biggest loss of the game. We walked eight people; we almost walked the whole lineup. I told our pitchers, ‘We’re only as good as our misses.’ Our misses need to be good misses rather than over the play.”
In the top of the first, freshman utility Sabrina Wick singled to first base and proceeded to steal second and third while freshman infielder Skylar Rucker was in the batter’s box. Senior utility Jaylen Prichard drove an RBI double ball over Jackson’s head to bring home Wick and kick off the weekend series with a 2-0 lead.
Coming into the game, UTSA had only recorded a total of six home runs throughout the season. The Roadrunners earned half their total in one night with three, against the American Athletic Conference’s top home-run-scoring team no less. The ‘Runners have been in eight one-run games this season. UTSA used four pitchers and walked eight batters while the Pirates only walked four. The Roadrunners scored five runs off seven hits compared to the Pirates 10 runs off 12 hits.
“We have to take a blow and forget it,” Stuedeman said. “We have to have a short-term memory, respond and keep competing.”
UTSA will continue conference play against East Carolina at noon on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
