Vikram Solar, one of India’s largest solar module manufacturers, plans to broaden its capabilities with a 1 GWh fully integrated solid-state cell and battery manufacturing facility. This facility is initially planned to scale up to 5 GWh and will produce the new PowerHive Battery Storage. Vikram Solar will utilize the technology of its partners, Entity2 Energy Storage Pvt ltd., which holds several patents for non-lithium solid-state battery technologies, and the battery will include a proprietary Battery Management System (BMS).
Several solar module companies have also expanded in the energy storage sector. Vikram Solar is certainly poised to contribute to the energy storage sector by applying its experience in solar PV module manufacturing, and pairing that offering with solid-state battery technology, and aligning with India’s “self-reliant” (Atmanirbharta) initiatives.
“Vikram Solar has always worked towards contributing to India’s renewable energy transformation and continues to drive large-scale solar adoption,” stated Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman & Managing Director, Vikram Solar. “Our solid-state batteries, developed and manufactured with majority components which are India-made, support ‘Atmanirbharta’ and align with India’s renewable energy and climate goals.”
India currently only meets only ~15-20% of its power requirement from renewable energy and the revised target is 50% of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030. To accommodate such a high proportion of variable generation in the overall energy mix, there will be a need of additional investment in battery storage.
Advantages of Vikram Solar Solid-state Batteries
- Minimal loss of electroactive metal enables batteries with greater power storage.
- The use of this technology in batteries is both thermal and fire hazard safe.
- Works in a wide range of temperature and operating conditions and no dendrite formation in the batteries.
- Stable for a life of 10,000 cycles.
- Stable at charge rate of 5C
