What to know about ‘Parasite’ and ‘Memories of Murder’ director’s new film starring Robert Pattinson- The Week

It’s not the first time that Bong Joon-ho, the man behind the Oscar-winning Parasite and other celebrated films such as Memories of Murder, is venturing into big-scale filmmaking. Having previously done it in films like The Host (one of the best monster movies ever made), Okja, and Snowpiercer, Joon-ho is no stranger to spectacle and big ideas.

His new film, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson sees the Korean filmmaker return to the sci-fi world. It hits Indian screens this Friday (March 7, 2025) in regular, IMAX and 4DX formats.

What’s it about?

As in any of his earlier films, expect Joon-ho to blend dark humour with serious and thought-provoking ideas. In Mickey 17, Pattinson plays Mikey, a low-ranking crew member aboard a spaceship tasked with a perilous assignment that involves him dying and then being cloned multiple times, with the memories of his previous versions intact.

The film is an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s 2022 sci-fi novel Mickey7. It has a sequel titled Antimatte Blues.

The genre

In an interview with the LA Times, Joon-ho described the film as a “capitalist tragedy” that toys with the idea of a worker getting replaced when another one leaves, with a sci-fi twist. Despite the tragic elements, Joon-ho thinks of it as his funniest film. “I think in real life, humans are just funny creatures. No matter how harsh or depressing reality can get, people always manage to have a laugh. We’re just these goofy, ridiculous creatures, always making the same mistakes.”

In the same interview, Pattinson mentions the “light touch” with which Joon-ho shot a “montage of grotesque deaths” adding, “There’s something so playful and almost childlike — it inspires a lot of trust in him.”

The influences

Joon-ho has mentioned looking at Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and John Carpenter’s The Thing as primary influences on some of the design choices, such as the look of the spaceship and the overall aesthetic of the film.
